This one size fits all Grate Guard is constructed with rugged, polymer components that won’t rust or corrode, and is designed with woven polypropylene to provide superior strength and durability to withstand outdoor elements. The Grate Guard Plus offers protection for storm drains without the need to lift the grating as the Ultra-Drain Guard and some of our other products do. The grating on most drains is very heavy and cumbersome and if not lifted properly, can pose safety risks for personnel. Another advantage the Grate Guard Plus is that it’s a “one size fits most” type product. So you could buy multiple units knowing that a little trimming is all that will need to be done (if anything) to insure a proper fit.
While it is advantageous to not have to lift the grating (as mentioned in the above answer), having the product exposed can be an issue in some cases. The Ultra-Grate Guard Plus would likely be damaged if run over by a street sweeper. It is also less likely to withstand repeated exposure to cars, trucks and other traffic as compared to an “under the grate” type of stormwater product. In addition, the Grate Guard Plus does not have an oil/hydrocarbon absorption component and will only keep sediment, sand, dirt, trash and debris out of the storm drain.
The Ultra-Inlet Guard is similar in ease of installation but also removes oil and other hydrocarbons. Depending on the application the Ultra-Filter Sock could be a good option as well.
The Ultra-Grate Guard Plus is made of polypropylene. It is a very rugged fabric and does an excellent job of filtering sediment, sand, debris and other pollutants from stormwater. Please note that it does NOT filter hydrocarbons.
The opening in the middle of the Grate Guard Plus is a bypass port. If a large amount of rainfall occurs in a short period of time or if the unit is not maintained and has “blinded over” the bypass port will allow stormwater to flow into the drain untreated.
The Ultra-Grate Guard Plus removes sand, sediment, silt, dirt, trash and debris but does NOT remove oil or other hydrocarbons from stormwater flow.
