State-of-the-art, high-performance sorbent, and filter media for both stormwater management and oil spill applications
Ultra X-Tex has a variety of uses as it pertains to stormwater and clean-up applications. It is made of a proprietary blend of fibers that are treated and naturally absorb oils and greases from water while allowing water to flow through the material. Ultra X-Tex will hold onto the oils and greases and will not release them back into the water.
Ultra-X-Tex material is also an exceptional tool for oil spill clean-up. The rolled fabric is different than polypropylene in that it allows water to instantly filter through the material and pulls off the oil selectively as the material is hydrophilic. Polypropylene repels the water and this can make it take longer for the oil to be readily absorbed in a surf environment where the oil is no longer a surface sheen, rather it is being broken up in the surf.
Product Highlights
- Produced from recycled synthetic fibers.
- Utilizing state-of-the-art technology, materials are blended and processed into a lightweight fiber mass with an enormous surface area and interstitial spaces creating a high-performance sorbent and filter media.
- Designed for use as a durable long lasting geotextile and filter media.
- Allows large volumes of water to pass through while sorbing liquid hydrocarbons, including petroleum, animal and vegetable oils.
- Cost effective—absorbs an average of 13 times its own weight of liquid hydrocarbons.
- Great for use in oil/water separators, stormwater and wastewater filtration systems and water "polishing" applications.
- Approximately 85-90 % of sorbed oils can be reclaimed from Ultra-X-Tex and the media reused.
- Ultra-X-Tex is environmentally benign and user-friendly. It does not leach harmful substances into the environment and when incinerated produces minimal residue or ash.
There are many ways that Ultra X-Tex can be used. Here are some standard products that are now available from UltraTech:
- Oil Blankets are a concept that is being well received as a last line of defense along the shore and in the surf. Each 5′ x 10′ Ultra-Oil Blanket can hold up to 8.3 gallons (31.5 liters) of oil.
- Spill Fence – This “silt fence” type application uses stakes and wire backing, the Ultra X-Tex can be placed in front of marshes, wetlands, and any shoreline where it’s relatively flat water. The ability of Ultra X-Tex to allow water to easily flow through it while pulling off the oil makes it an excellent filter material and protective barrier for sensitive estuaries.
- Oil Booms – Available from UltraTech in 6′ lengths with pre-installed connecting hardware. The skirted model also provides a 34″ skirt to capture sub-surface oil.
- Stormwater Management – Ultra-X-Tex is available in many of our stormwater management products.
- Rail Mat – Ultra-X-Tex absorbs oils and fuels around railroad tracks during railcar maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I use X-Tex instead of the polypropylene absorbents that everyone else uses?
X-Tex removes oil and other hydrocarbons much faster than traditional absorbents. A polypropylene sorbent material will not allow water to freely pass through it. Oil will absorb at the surface of a polypropylene absorbent, and the polypropylene will eventually blind over and the center will not absorb any oil. Click here to learn more about the advantages that X-Tex has over polypropylene.
But polypropylene is cheaper than X-Tex!
Is it though? When you simply compare the cost per foot (or inch), then yes, it is cheaper. But when you take a closer look and consider how much more X-Tex absorbs, you will quickly see that not only is X-Tex the better choice from a performance standpoint but it is also the better choice from a cost standpoint. Take a look at this example.
Is Ultra-X-Tex new? I don't want any surprises.
Far from it. X-Tex has been in use in industrial and stormwater applications for more than ten years.
Is X-Tex easy to use?
Yes, it can be easily cut using a large pair of scissors and sewn on with a heavy-duty/industrial sewing machine.
Can absorbed oil be removed/extracted from Ultra-X-Tex?
Yes, approximately 85-90 % of sorbed oils can be reclaimed from Ultra-X-Tex and the media reused, through a press or centrifuge.
Is Ultra-X-Tex safe for the environment?
Ultra-X-Tex is environmentally benign and user-friendly. It does not leach harmful substances into the environment and when incinerated produces minimal residue or ash.
What is the flow rate for Ultra-X-Tex?
The flow rate for X-Tex is 151 gal/ft2/min. or 6152 l/m2/min.).
